The city of Toronto has issued a heat alert to start the work week, warning residents to protect themselves from the sun on a hot and humid Monday.

Temperatures were expected to reach 33 C by Monday afternoon, with humidex values making it feel more like mid-30s to 40s in some areas.

While Monday will be hot, Environment Canada says southern Ontario residents should prepare for an even hotter Tuesday – when temperatures are expected to reach 37 C.

Environment Canada says humidex values will reach the low-40s on Tuesday and anticipate issuing humidex warnings.

“Tuesday may be the hottest day so far this year in some spots, especially Toronto,” said a special weather statement issued to the southern Ontario region on Monday.

Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Toronto's acting medical officer of health, said the heat alert issued Monday would remain in effect until further notice.

During a heat alert, the public is encouraged to contact family and friends, especially isolated seniors at a greater risk of heat-related illnesses.

Drinking plenty of water and staying in the shade are also encouraged.

More seasonable temperatures are expected to return on Wednesday, and temperatures in the high-20s are forecast through the weekend.
