Police said a man died in hospital early Monday morning after his car veered off the road in the city's west end, colliding with a fence, tree and a brick wall.

The incident happened near Colwood Road at about 6 a.m., when a car travelling northbound on Royal York Road and collided with several barriers, police told Ctvtoronto.ca.

Smoke was reportedly billowing from the car as Toronto Fire Services and an ambulance arrived on scene.

Emergency crews pulled the 53-year-old driver from the vehicle. He was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he died a few hours later.

Police said a medical condition is thought to be the reason that the man lost control of his vehicle. No one else was injured in the crash.

Further details about the man will not be released until his family is notified, police said.
