Police have identified the driver who died after his SUV was struck by a pair of wheels that flew off a transport truck.

Paul Philip Koenderman, 69, died in hospital following the incident on Highway 400 north of Vaughan on Wednesday.

Koenderman was traveling north near King Road when his vehicle was struck by a pair of wheels. The wheels had fallen off a southbound lumber truck, and rolled into the northbound lanes, destroying the hood and roof of Koenderman's SUV.

Koenderman was freed from the wreckage and rushed to hospital by air ambulance, but later died of his injuries. He was identified publicly by OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt on Friday morning.

The Burlington resident was the former CEO of Aecon Industrial Group. He was also former board member of Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro, and had volunteered with the United Way of Cambridge and North Dumfries.

Investigators are checking the truck's maintenance records as part of their investigation into the crash.
