A man in his twenties was the single victim of an early-morning house fire in Markham on Monday, suffering burns to his hands in the blaze.

Neighbours called 911 at about 4 a.m. after noticing smoke was pouring out of the windows of the man's townhouse unit on Greensborough Village Circle, near Bur Oak Avenue. Police were the first to arrive on the scene, where they found the man behind the home.

He suffered burns to his hands and smoke inhalation and was transported to hospital.

The fire victim was the lone occupant of the burning unit, but a neighbouring family was also forced out of its home.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
