Police say that a man shot in Richmond Hill on Friday had gunned down his ex-girlfriend earlier in the day.

A 40-year-old woman died Friday after being found with gunshot wounds in a laneway behind Dufferin Mall in the area of Chesley Avenue and Brock Avenue.

She has since been identified as Andene Graham of Toronto.

Police said during a press conference Monday that Graham had been in a three-year relationship with Paul Michael Black that had ended last summer.

Hours later in Richmond Hill, Black suffered a gunshot wound to the head after an interaction with members of York Regional Police.

In the early morning hours of the next day, Black died at Sunnybrook hospital.

Police said that Black had previously faced domestic abuse charges.

Ontario's police watchdog continues to investigate Black's death.

The incident occurred Saturday morning when police received a call for "unknown trouble" at Lennox Park near Major Mackenzie Drive East and Yonge Street.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit says York Regional Police reported receiving a cellphone call, which was disconnected but traced to the Markville Mall, at Highway 7 and McCowan Road.

A second disconnected phone call was traced to a park at Palmer and Lennox Avenues.

York Regional Police said officers were dispatched to the scene; a weapon was discharged and the male victim suffered at least one gunshot wound.

The victim was rushed to Sunnybrook hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Black was pronounced dead at 8:20 a.m. on Saturday.

The SIU is an arms-length agency that is typically called when police officers are involved in an incident where someone has died, been seriously injured, or alleges sexual assault.
