A man in his 30s has died after he was dragged under a GO train at Union Station on Tuesday evening.

Metrolinx spokesperson Ann Marie Aikins couldn't comment on what led to the incident but told CTV Toronto it was a "tragic accident."

The unidentified man, who is not a Metrolinx employee, was struck by a Barrie-bound train as it was leaving the station at approximately 5:40 p.m.

Police told reporters on scene that his bag, jacket or part of his clothing got stuck on the back of a moving train. He was dragged onto the tracks and under the vehicle.

Aikins said more details will be provided after investigators have examined surveillance footage.

Toronto Paramedic Services say the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the death, grief counsellors were made available for all staff members who witnessed the incident.

Aikins said the incident did not result in any delays for passengers, though some platforms were closed on Tuesday evening for investigation.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them at 416-808-1900.
