A 23-year-old man is dead after police believe he lost control of his vehicle and crashed head-on into a tree.

Niagara Regional Police said the Fort Erie man was pronounced dead by Niagara Emergency Medical Services workers. They found his body inside a vehicle on Ridge Road, just north of Nigh Road in the Fort Erie, Ont.

Police said that around 5:20 a.m. on Saturday on-duty officers, during a routine patrol, came across a single-vehicle crash. After getting closer to the 1997 Honda Civic, the body of the man was found inside.

Police believe the man lost control of the car while driving northbound on a curve, crossed over the centerline and careened into a tree.

Police said an investigation is underway and that speed was a factor in the crash.
