A 28-year-old man is dead following a shooting in a parking lot in Mimico early Thursday morning.

It happened on Vanevery Street near Royal York Road and Lake Shore Boulevard at around 2:50 a.m. in a parking lot behind an apartment building.

Police were called to the area after reports came in about gunshots.

When officers arrived, they located the male victim unconscious and lying on the ground. The victim was rushed to a nearby trauma centre by paramedics but he succumbed to his injuries upon their arrival.

Police released few details pertaining to the shooting but it is believed the victim was shot following an argument.

Det. Murray Barnes told reporters at the scene Thursday morning that police are appealing for witnesses who heard any sort of disturbance behind the apartment building to come forward.

“There was a commotion at the back. Several witnesses have come forward and said that there was some kind of an argument in the parking lot and as a result some people opened up their curtains and had a look,” said Barnes.

Investigators do not believe the victim lived in the nearby apartment building but said the victim was likely “familiar with someone in the building” and had been in the area before.

Police said that a vehicle was seen fleeing the scene following the shooting but have not released a description for that vehicle.

The victim has not yet been identified.
