Police have re-opened Highway 400 in both directions in the Barrie area after whiteout conditions forced officials to shutdown the major artery.

The southbound lanes of the highway had to be shut after a 20-vehicle pileup.

Environment Canada had released a weather statement that warned of blasts of heavy snow and wind, causing squalls in several parts of the region Wednesday morning.

Just before 1 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police said that all lanes had re-opened between Mapleview Drive and Simcoe Road 88.
