Four cats are dead after a west-end animal shelter caught fire early Monday morning.

Toronto police said smoke was reported billowing from the windows of the Kennel Café, at 295 Roncesvalles Ave., south of Bloor Street, at about 3 a.m.

Toronto fire crews arrived at the scene shortly after 3 a.m. and began an immediate search of the burning building.

Acting District Chief Doug Harper said six cats and one dog were pulled from the building. Four cats were pronounced dead at the scene while the remaining cats and the dog were successfully revived.

Harper said emergency crews used a special breathing tool designed to fit over animal snouts to revive the cats.

No humans were injured in the fire.

The cause of the fire has not been determined and fire officials continue to investigate the blaze.

Roncesvalles Avenue was closed to traffic between Geoffrey Street and Westminster Avenue as crews cleared the scene.
