Toronto firefighters beat down an east-end fire that left the home's occupant injured and had to call out a hazardous materials team after chemicals were found on the premises.

CTV Toronto reported that 55 Division police said the home did contain a drug lab -- something that caught neighbours offguard.

Friday's fire occurred at 837 Craven Rd., which is located west of Coxwell Avenue and north of Gerrard Street East, or not far from Monarch Park.

Capt. Adrian Ratushniak of Toronto Fire Services told ctvtoronto.ca that the call came in at 4:17 p.m.

"We've since put out a fire in the house. There was an occupant there," he said.

The man had sustained burns. EMS paramedics have taken him to hospital for treatment.

Searches didn't turn up any other people in the home, he said.

However, firefighters did find "chemicals" in the home, but Ratushniak said he didn't know what type of chemicals they might be or in what quantities.

A hazardous materials team has analytical equipment to determine what's in the air. In addition, a decontamination unit has been dispatched on a precautionary basis, he said.

Ratushniak said dispatching of such teams to fires, while not common, isn't that unusual either.
