Ontario's public elementary school teachers are ramping up work-to-rule action by withdrawing from all voluntary extracurricular activities.

The escalation was announced last week, in a statement from the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) that said talks with the Ontario Public School Boards' Association and the province had failed, prompting the union's 78,000 members to take further action.

As of Wednesday, members will not take part in any voluntary extracurricular activities. The decision is the next step in Phase 3 of the union's work-to-rule campaign, which launched in September.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne said previously that union members may have their pay docked if they don't end their work-to-rule campaigns by Nov. 1.

The union has also filed a bad-faith bargaining complaint against the school board association and the province based on information disclosed earlier this month. The complaint will be reviewed by the Ontario Labour Relations Board.
