An electrical fire forced residents of an East York highrise out of their homes late Tuesday night.

Scores of residents were evacuated after a fire tore through the building at 80 Cosburn Ave., near Logan Avenue, shortly before midnight.

Toronto Fire Services said the fire was started by faulty electrical wiring between the third and seventh floors. Rubber insulation in the walls began to melt and caused heavy smoke to fill the hallways.

Lorne Buckingham, Toronto Fire Services division commander, said no one was injured in the fire. Residents were allowed back into the building to collect essentials before being shuttled to temporary housing.

Buckingham said there is no word on how long residents will be displaced for, but it could be a couple of days if the wiring needs to be replaced.

"These events can stretch for a length time period if the wiring inside the building has been burnt and has to be taken out and new ones put it. It could drag on a bit," he told reporters at the scene. "We really don't know the extent of the damage."
