BAYFIELD, Ont. - The invasive emerald ash borer has been found in Huron County for the first time.

The beetle was first reported in Canada in southern Ontario in the summer of 2002. Since then, officials have been trying to control the spread of the insects, which are highly destructive to ash trees and pose an economic and environmental threat.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says the beetle infestation was found at a private campground outside Bayfield, Ont., on Lake Huron.

The emerald ash borer is commonly spread when people move materials such as firewood.

The beetle, which has killed more than 20 million ash trees in North America, has previously been found in the Toronto area, Ottawa, Sault Ste. Marie, several southwestern Ontario communities and Monteregie, Que.
