Toronto firefighters battled a two-alarm fire on the roof of St. Michael's Hospital on Friday afternoon, but no smoke drifted into the facility.

The blaze broke out just before 1 p.m. at the downtown hospital, located on Bond Street near Queen Street East and Yonge Street.

The fire was contained to the roof and no smoke entered the building, so care was not affected.

"Toronto Fire arrived and told us there was no risk to patient areas or staff, so that was a relief," hospital spokeswoman Sarah Baker told CTV.ca.

"People could smell it, but there was no smoke in the hospital."

It was a short-lived fire as crews had it out by about 1:30 p.m. No one was injured.

Some patients staying on the upper floors were told not to leave their rooms as a precaution while the fire was being doused.

Elevators in the area were shut down for a brief time.

A number of fire trucks were called to the scene, as was a hazardous materials crew.

The cause of the fire hasn't been yet identified, but preliminary reports suggest a roofing company was working on the roof at the time.
