Crews on scene of 5-alarm fire at chrome plating facility in Toronto's west end
Investigators are working to determine what caused a five-alarm fire at a chrome plating facility in Toronto's west end on Thursday morning.
The Toronto Fire Service was first called to the blaze at an industrial building on Nashville Avenue, located near Rogers and Weston roads, at around 10 a.m. on Tuesday
"Upon arrival, our crews were met with heavy flame and smoke," Deputy Fire Chief Jim Jessop told reporters on Thursday afternoon.
All occupants of the structure, as well as adjoining buildings, were evacuated as a precaution.
"All of the occupants of the building have been accounted for," Jessop said, adding that no injuries have been reported.
According to a spokesperson for the fire service, the building was difficult to access due to its close proximity to CP Rail tracks and trains were stopped for a period of time to allow emergency crews to work in the area.
Nearby schools were also placed in a hold and secure due to the smoke and buses were ordered to shelter people displaced by the fire.
"We will be on site for a number of hours," Jessop said.
Speaking to reporters later in the afternoon, Fire Chief Matthew Pegg said the fire investigations team is on site.
"They have been here for the past number of hours. They follow the same process always. There is a comprehensive… origin, cause and circumstance investigation. That will commence with interviews with people that were there and may have see what happened," Pegg said.
He added that the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) has also been notified.
"The OFM is engaged with this as well," he said. "The initial walk around indicates that there doesn’t appear to be any significant exposure or spread to the adjacent buildings."
