Firefighters worked to put out a blaze at a former automotive parts plant near Welland, Ont., Tuesday afternoon.
According to Niagara police, the fire was reported in an abandoned portion of the former Henniges Automotive plant around 4:30 p.m.
Thick, black smoke billowed into the sky and, at one point, metal cladding fell off an outer wall as firefighters doused the fire.
Police said there were several explosions inside the plant as firefighters worked to put out the blaze.
Nearby residents were being told to remain inside their homes.
The Henniges plant closed in March 2011, leaving 300 employees without a job. The plant used to produce anti-vibration systems and rubber-sealing systems.
Police said the fire was considered under control shortly before 8 p.m.
