A four-year-old child was rushed to the Hospital for Sick Children by air ambulance Monday morning after a two-car crash in Milton.

Halton police say the little girl was seriously injured when the car she was in collided with another vehicle at Britannia and Trafalgar Roads at around 7 a.m.

She is being treated for life-threatening injuries, police said.

Her 28-year-old mother, who was sitting in the driver's seat of the vehicle, was also injured.

Police say the woman was stopped on the road in a live lane after she experienced car trouble. That's when she was rear-ended by a van.

"I believe the four-ways (flashers) were on. But at that time of day, there is a lot of traffic," said Sgt. Brian Carr of Halton Regional Police. "I think one person driving a van was unable to avoid her and collided with the rear of her vehicle."

Trafalgar Road between Lower Base Line and Britannia Road was closed for several hours to allow Halton's collision reconstruction unit to investigate the accident, according to police.

No charges have been laid in the incident.
