Eastbound lanes of Lake Shore Blvd. W. are expected to remain closed until around noon Tuesday due to a water main break that flooded the street during the morning rush hour a day before.

Traffic going east along Lake Shore was being diverted Tuesday morning on to Rees St. or the Gardiner Expressway's on ramp. The roadway was opened to traffic around noon the day before.

The roadway was damaged by the rush of water from a cast iron water main that is believed to be about 80 years old. A hole more than two-square metres in size was left in Lake Shore Blvd. as a result of the flood.

Repair work may be as much as $80,000, Toronto Water general manager Lou Di Gironimo told the Toronto Star. The broken water main was set to be replaced between Spadina Ave. and York St. before yesterday's incident.

It is not the first time the water main has caused trouble along Lake Shore Blvd. In November 2006 water gushed through the pavement, flooding the roadway between York and Simcoe Streets. It was the second time in a few weeks that the pipe ruptured.

Replacement of the aging and broken water main is expected to cost $1.5 million, the Star reported.
