The eastbound lanes of Lake Shore Boulevard directly in front of the Rogers Centre will be closed for several days following a broken water main.

The main broke at about 3:30 a.m. on Monday, flooding the street in both directions between Rees and Lower Simcoe streets.

Police closed the street as a result, affecting the morning commute.

Westbound lanes were reopened at about 2 p.m., but police the eastbound lanes will be closed for a couple of days until the extensive road damage has been repaired.

It is not the first time this stretch of road has been closed due to a broken water main.

In November of 2006 a water main broke in the same area, snarling traffic in the downtown core. At that time cars were diverted around the area because water was 10 centimetres deep in some places.

That flood was blamed on four separate breaks in a 12-inch underground water main.
