TORONTO - Trees Ontario says it was the largest spring tree planting effort the province has seen since the 1980s.

The non-profit agency says close to three million trees were planted across southern Ontario this spring.

They include more than two million new trees planted as part of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources' 50 Million Tree Program.

That aim is to plant 50 million trees in Ontario by 2020 as part of the United Nations Billion Tree program.

Natural Resources Minister Donna Cansfield says Ontario is well on its way to meeting the 50 million goal based on "this great early response from Ontarians."

All trees planted are native to Ontario and include White Cedar, White and Red Pine, White Spruce, White and Red Oak, and Silver and Red Maple.

Trees were planted this spring by conservation authorities, stewardship councils, forestry consultants, local community groups, landowners, municipalities and at hundreds of planting events.
