An early morning car crash on the 401 has left one boy dead and injured four others.

A Hyundai Sonata was travelling eastbound near Campbellville around 1 a.m. Sunday when the driver apparently lost control and flipped the car into a ditch, the Toronto Star reports.

The boy was rushed to Milton General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Four other passengers were injured.

The accident comes during one of the most dangerous weekends for drivers.

According to police statistics, 11 people died on OPP-patrolled roadways over the 2007 Labour Day weekend.

However, police report there have been 30 per cent fewer traffic crashes so far in 2008 compared to the same time last year.

"That translates to nearly a hundred lives saved since last year," OPP Const. Cam Woolley told CTV Toronto at the start of the long weekend. "I think that's a result of the street-racing legislation, where we're targeting extreme drivers, aircraft enforcement, but also a lot of buy-in from drivers themselves. People are getting serious about safety."

As usual, OPP officers are out in full force to patrol Ontario's highways during the last long weekend of summer.

In addition to officers in cruisers, two aircraft will be flying over roads, looking for unsafe drivers.
