A woman has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being shot in downtown Toronto.

It happened at Queen and Sherbourne streets shortly before 9 p.m.

The circumstances surrounding the incident were not immediately known.

According to paramedics, the patient was found alert at the scene. Toronto police said the 18-year-old victim was shot once in the lower back.

Witnesses at the scene reported hearing multiple gunshots. Numerous evidence markers could be seen on the street, though it was not immediately clear if they were placed to indicate shell casings.

The motive behind the shooting was not immediately clear.

The area has been closed down as the investigation continues.
