A controversial tax on plastic bags could be cut by the end of the year, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford said on Tuesday.

Ford posted on his official Twitter account on Tuesday that he will try to get rid of the bag tax by the end of the year "as promised."

Consumers are now charged five cents for each plastic bag they require.

June 1 marks the second anniversary of the city-imposed plastic bag tax, introduced by former mayor David Miller in an attempt to promote the use of reusable bags.

Ford held the plastic bag tax up as an example of unnecessary tax during last year's mayoral election. He questioned where the nickels went to, and whether there was a better way to promote reusable bags.

Retailers currently keep the five cents and are able to spend it any way they see fit, although several large organizations donate it to various environmental and sustainability initiatives in the city.
