From chalkboards to smartboards, education in the Greater Toronto Area has come a long way.

To celebrate that journey, the Toronto District School Board has opened a museum featuring historical items from classrooms of yesteryears. It is considered the largest collection of public education items in Canada.

"We try to give sort of a general overview of the history of the public education in the Toronto area," archivist Greg McKinnon told CTV Toronto.

Open Monday to Friday, the museum is housed in the basement of Eastern Commerce Collegiate Institute. Admittance is free, but guests must call in advance.

Some of the items featured inside the museum include old desks, faded pamphlets that explain the dangers of a nuclear attack, and an LP warning students of the dangers of drugs and sex. In total, there are more than one million items dating back to 1847.
