A two-day meeting organized by the federal government kicked off in Toronto on Saturday afternoon to discuss resettlement plans for Syrian refugees in Canada.

The meeting, which was held at the Intercontinental Hotel downtown, had representatives from the federal, provincial and municipal levels, as well as individuals from non-governmental organizations.

Representatives discussed a number of topics including health care, housing, transportation issues and basic human needs for the incoming refugees.

Mario Calla, from COSTI Immigration Services, said the meeting helps everyone prepare for the refugees to arrive.

“We're learning from each other because some provinces and some local groups are a little further ahead than others, so we're learning from each other to ensure we're all up to speed and ready,” Calla said.

Canada has pledged to welcome 10,000 Syrian refugees by the end of the year, with another 15,000 slated to arrive by the end of February.

The two-day meeting continues on Sunday.
