Police have arrested a GO bus passenger who had claimed that he was in possession of a bomb.

According to Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins, the bus was travelling on Highway 407 near Britannia Road when a passenger approached the driver to inform them that there was a man on the bus claiming to be in possession of a bomb.

At that point, the driver immediately pulled over and contacted Ontario Provincial Police.

All passengers as well as the driver were initially kept on the bus, however when police arrived they allowed everyone except the suspect to get off the vehicle.

At that point, Aikins says that police began negotiating with the suspect and were eventually able to convince him to surrender.

Ontario Provincial Police spokesperson Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said a 28-year-old Hamilton man was arrested. Schmidt said there were no charges at that time.

The highway was closed in both directions between Britannia and Derry Roads during the standoff.

Just before 4:45 p.m., police said the eastbound lanes had been reopened, but westbound lanes remained closed.

No injuries were reported.
