Animal services officials are searching for the owner of a dog that had to be rescued from the Scarborough Bluffs on Sunday afternoon.

The Doberman Pinscher was spotted by a passerby as she walked by the cliffs on Saturday evening. Kristen Shmanka called animal services, and fire crews were called to help in the rescue. Shmanka said she also brought food to the cliff and threw it down to the trapped canine.

Firefighters prepared to attempt a rescue, but by the time they were ready, it was too dark to safely perform the rescue. On Sunday morning, they reappeared and rappelled down the bluff. The dog was rescued, given water and brought to a Toronto shelter.

On Monday, officials said the dog was recovering well, but they are still searching for its owner. Animal Services said the dog wasn't wearing a collar and didn't have an identification chip.

If the dog is still unclaimed at the end of the week, it will be put up for adoption.
