A 27-year-old man charged with first-degree murder in connection with a New Years slaying on Queen Street West was kept in custody after a short court appearance Tuesday.

Luke Heath has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Heath appeared before a judge through a video link Tuesday and was told to make his next court appearance on Feb. 1 at Toronto's Old City Hall.

The killing occurred near Queen and Portland Streets and was the first homicide of 2011.

Victim Brian Takahashi, 20, died of stab wounds in hospital. It's alleged that a verbal altercation led to the death.

Takahashi's friend Ethan Sarfeld said at the time that the incident had quickly spiraled out of control.
