Police are continuing to investigate after a pedestrian was struck and killed in Scarborough Village Monday night.

It happenednd near Eglinton Avenue a Markham Road shortly before 10 p.m.

Police say the pedestrian, a 62-year-old Toronto man, was crossing the road mid-block when he was struck.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A section of Eglinton Avenue was shut down as police investigated overnight but the area has since reopened.

Const. Clint Stibbe initially told CP24 that a 54-year-old man had been charged with impaired driving causing death but it appears those charges have been dropped.

Police say they driver may still face charges.

Stibbe said Toronto has seen a big spike in traffic fatalities this year.

"We are looking at a 47 per cent increase in the number of fatalities that we’ve seen on city streets so far this year compared to last year," he said, adding that pedestrian fatalities have reached 15, which is equal to the number of pedestrian fatalities during the same time period last year.

"In the end what we’ve got is essentially very dangerous conditions. All of it is to blame on pedestrian and driver error," he said.
