Toronto police are investigating an alleged assault involving council hopeful John Nunziata, who is hoping to unseat incumbent Frank Di Giorgio in the hotly contested Ward 12.

Sgt. Lesley Hildred told CTV Toronto that officers were called to a polling station in the Keele Street and Rogers Road area on Monday. He said that Nunziata is claiming he is the victim of an assault.

According to the former MP and city councillor, there was a physical altercation after an opponent took issue with the fact that he was on the sidewalk of the polling station. Nunziata says he was not injured, but was forced to call police. But according to Hildred, the accused person is not a "candidate."

Nunziata has not named the individual involved in the alleged assault. He is running against Di Giorgio, Nick Dominelli and Lekan Olawoye.
