Good news for drivers using Highway 401 in Mississauga.

The province announced today the highway will be widening to 12 lanes between Credit River and Hurontario street, where highways 410 and 403 merge onto Highway 401.

Construction will begin sometime later this year and the expansion will be complete by the fall of 2019. The cost of the project is estimated to be $81 million and the construction will create as many as 800 jobs.

When finished, the stretch of highway will contain 10 general purpose lanes and two high occupancy vehicle lanes.

The province says it’s spending more than $2.1 billion on roads and bridges this year.
