A 75-year-old woman is dead after a fire at a seniors' home in Newmarket, Ont., firefighters say.

The blaze broke out at approximately 12:20 p.m. on Sunday on the seventh floor of the Fairy Lake Gardens seniors’ residence at 468 Eagle Street near Water Street, Fire Platoon Chief Art Bellar said.

Paramedics said four other people were taken to hospital and treated for minor smoke inhalation.

The fire was knocked down shortly after it broke out, and most of the residents have returned to their apartments, York Region officials said in a statement Sunday evening.

In the statement, Wayne Emmerson, the CEO of York Region, expressed his condolences to the residents of Fairy Lake Gardens and promised that the city would conduct a full investigation.

Bellar said there was little smoke damage, thanks to the building's code that requires all doors to be kept closed.

The cause of the fire is still unclear, but the incident has not been deemed suspicious.

The Ontario Fire Marshal will be investigating the fire, police say.
