Construction workers have been ordered to stay away from Yorkdale mall, causing outrage on social media from users who say the move is elitist.

“No Workers are allowed inside the mall during construction work hours,” reads a sign from construction company EllisDon that is circulating on Twitter.

“The Food court or anywhere else in the mall is NOT permitted anymore,” it goes on to say. “If workers are caught inside the mall they will be removed and dealt with accordingly.”

EllisDon spokesperson Dustin Luchka told CP24 Friday that the rule was put in place to prevent mud from being tracked in.

“Constant mud on the floors makes the environment dangerous for Yorkdale shoppers,” Luchka said.

Yorkdale Shopping Centre opened in 1964 and is undergoing a $331 million expansion.

Versace, Jimmy Choo and Nordstrom have all announced plans to open stores.
