Family members have identified a 22-year-old man who was found dead after going missing in a Brampton lake.
Satvar Singh was reported missing on Sunday evening, near Professor's Lake, a 65-acre artificial lake located near Bramalea Road and Bovaird Drive.
Peel Regional Police said he had been walking along the shore of the lake with his cousin when he went into the water, at approximately 8:30 p.m. The friend said he never came back out.
Police search and rescue divers and firefighters searched the lake on Sunday, until it became too dark.
Crews returned to the scene Monday morning to resume the search, and located Singh's body shortly after 8 a.m.
Family members told CTV Toronto's Naomi Parness that Singh was a college student, who was a "very nice guy, very polite." He'd come to Canada from India two years ago, they said.
Though Professor's Lake is mostly shallow, police said there is a deep drop just outside of a designated swimming area. Singh had been swimming in a prohibited area, police said.
Singh's death is the second fatality in the lake this year.
Brampton Mayor Linda Jeffrey released a statement Monday extending her sympathies to Singh’s family.
"Our community is once again saddened and mourning the sudden and premature loss of life at Professor's Lake yesterday evening," Jeffrey said. "The thoughts of our community are with the family as they attempt to cope with this terrible loss."
Earlier this year, a father drowned while trying to save his daughter. The family had been wading in the water when the child slipped on a rock and fell. The man went into the lake to help her, but went underwater himself. The girl made it out safely.
