Fifteen drivers were arrested in York region over the weekend on alcohol-related charges, according to police.

Police said in a news release on Monday that three of those arrests were a result of vehicle collisions. One incident occurred on Saturday evening.

In one instance, an officer was walking through a police parking lot located at McCowan Road and Carlton Road in Markham around 7 p.m. The officer found a man sleeping in the driver’s seat of a Toyota Sienna van. As the officer approached, he said he noticed a strong smell of alcohol and saw an open case of beer inside the van.

The officer woke the man up and it became apparent the man was drunk and unaware he was in a police parking lot, the officer said.

The 34-year-old man was charged with one count of impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

Police said the 15 arrests were made in less than 72 hours.
