The uncle of a 17-year-old boy who was fatally shot in North York on Saturday said he wants his nephew to be remembered as a “lovely person.”

“He loved basketball,” Orlando Monteith told CP24 on Saturday night. “(He) liked to wear jogging suits and Jordans and stuff. It’s just sad for us right now. It’s very sad.”

Police arrived at a community housing complex on Shoreham Court, near Jane Street and Shoreham Drive, around noon. Officers found evidence of gunfire at the scene, Toronto police Const. David Hopkinson said.

The victim was shot multiple times by a suspect positioned over the fence in front of a home, according to police.

He was taken to hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

The victim appeared to have been visiting friends when he was shot, Toronto police Det. Sgt. Mike Carbone told media on Saturday night.

“I believe it was a targeted shooting,” Carbone said. Officers continue to canvass the area for more witnesses and surveillance video. They have already obtained one video, which Carbone said would eventually be released “when it’s appropriate to do so.”

“We’re doing our best to go through (video) as quickly as we possibly can,” he said.

Earlier in the day, police reported that two suspects were seen fleeing the scene in a dark-coloured SUV, however Carbone said he was waiting for more information before releasing detailed descriptions.

Police would not reveal the victim’s identity, however, Monteith identified his nephew as Caheem Monteith.

“We’re trying to hold up,” Monteith said. “We just want the people responsible – just come forward. We’re a family that’s grieving right now. We just lost my dad last year … Now to bury my nephew, it’s like one thing after the other.

The victim was not known to police, Carbone said.

The investigation is ongoing.
