One of the victims injured over the weekend in a shooting at a downtown restaurant has been charged by Toronto police.
Terry Nguyen, 29, is facing a total of nine firearms-related charges including possession of prohibited firearm with ammunition, careless storage of a firearm, and possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order.
According to police, Nguyen and his 28-year-old girlfriend were eating dinner at Michael’s on Simcoe steakhouse -- located on Simcoe Street, just south of Adelaide Street West -- when two hooded men entered the restaurant at approximately 10 p.m. and opened fire on the couple.
Officers said it appeared that the victims were targeted.
It is unclear how many of the charges are linked to Sunday’s shooting.
Nguyen was treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to the neck. The woman, was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition, but is expected to survive.
Initially, police said they were looking for a single suspect, but officers on scene later said they were searching for two people. Suspect descriptions have yet to be released, but Det. Paul Ward said they were wearing masks at the time.
Detectives are reviewing security footage from inside the restaurant, and are also canvassing the area in search of witnesses and other security camera footage.
The steakhouse is set to reopen on Thursday evening.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with more information is asked to contact police at 416-808-5200, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477 (TIPS).
