A man in his 20s has been charged after a woman reported being sexually assaulted by an Uber driver last month.
The incident was reported on Tuesday, Sept. 15. Police said a male Uber driver picked up a 25-year-old woman in the area of Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue, then drove her to her home near Lawrence Avenue and Avenue Road.
It is alleged that he sexually assaulted her before she got out of the vehicle. The woman reported that the driver used a profile listed as "Amritpal."
A few days after the incident, police identified Amritpal Singh as a suspect in the case. At the time, officers believed he was 21 years old. It was later determined that he is 24.
On Monday, Singh walked into Toronto Police's 32 Division and surrendered. The Scarborough resident was charged with forcible confinement and sexual assault.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with more information is asked to contact police at 416-808-3200 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477 (TIPS).
