Toronto-area travellers should check their flight schedules before heading to Pearson International Airport on Monday, as airlines warn of possible cancellations and delays caused by Tropical Storm Isaac.

Strong wind and heavy rain were heading toward the southern United States, including Florida and Louisiana on Monday. Mississippi and Alabama have already declared states of emergency.

The storm was expected to be upgraded to a Category 2 hurricane by Tuesday.

The severe weather has already caused travel concerns throughout the region and forced flight between Miami and Pearson airport were cancelled on Sunday.

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada has issued a travel advisory warning Canadians to avoid non-essential trips to areas in the path of Tropical Storm Isaac. The areas include the northern coast of Mexico and the Gulf Coast.

Air Canada issued a travel advisory Monday on flights to Cuba and Jamaica, as well as Miami Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and New Orleans.

Westjet has also issued a travel advisory for those flying to Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Fort Myers.

Both airlines are urging passengers to monitor their flight statuses on Monday and Tuesday.
