TORONTO - Toronto health officials have issued an extreme heat alert today, with the temperature expected to hit a record of 29 C this afternoon.

People are being urged to check on family, friends and neighbours, especially isolated adults and seniors who are at greater risk of suffering from heat-related illness.

Others at risk include people with chronic and pre-existing illnesses, infants and young children, people on certain medications and those living on the streets.

Seven cooling centres have been opened, and officials say people can also use air conditioned shopping malls, local libraries and neighbourhood community centres to cool off.
