Three people are under arrest following a wild attempt to flee police early this morning, one that left a trail of damage and the driver trapped in his overturned vehicle.

Thursday's incident began shortly before 6 a.m. near the intersection of Jarvis and Dundas Streets.

Police stopped a Jeep that they suspected to be stolen, Const. Hugh Smith told CTV Toronto.

"This person didn't want to stop. The only avenue, he thought, was using the pedestrian sidewalk," he said. "Dangerous move, moving up over there."

The driver drove the vehicle up onto the sidewalk, narrowly missing a police officer who had exited his cruiser.

The Jeep did strike a cruiser, went past the main entrance of an apartment complex. It struck a planter and overturned.

"It didn't take much with that speed and force to throw that vehicle on its side," Smith said.

The incident left Jarvis Street closed near the scene over the morning rush hour.

The driver and two female passengers suffered minor injuries and were arrested on the spot. They were taken to nearby St. Michael's Hospital for treatment, he said.

Police continue to investigate the individuals under arrest, he said.
