A security guard who was stabbed in the parking lot of the Yonge-Dundas Square complex on Thursday afternoon is expected to survive his injuries, according to police.

The guard was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries after sustaining multiple stab wounds. He had confronted three men breaking into cars in the busy downtown parking lot.

By Thursday evening his injuries were downgraded to non-life threatening.

Police have arrested three male suspects in connection to the stabbing. The suspects will appear at Old City Hall on Friday where they will face a number of charges, said Const. Tony Vella.

Two of the suspects were arrested in the surrounding area, and the third suspect was arrested near the College Park mall, just north of Yonge-Dundas Square. Police also recovered the knife used in the stabbing in the College Park mall area.

Police said they received a call around 3:30 p.m. about a stabbing in the bottom level of the parking lot located at the intersection of Yonge Street and Dundas Street West.

Police said the security guard became involved in an altercation just after 3 p.m. with three men in the parking garage, which is adjacent to Toronto’s Eaton Centre.

“It appeared that the security officer came across the three men and it’s reported that the three men were breaking into cars at the time,” said Vella.

It is unclear exactly what happened, but some sort of confrontation took place and the guard was stabbed, Vella said.

Police are now conducting a forensic examination of the crime scene.

Police are asking anyone who had a car in the parking lot that they suspect was broken into to contact police.

Vella applauded police and emergency crews for their quick action which led to arrests.

“This situation could have been much worse,” said Vella. “The security guard was stabbed a number of times throughout his body. This situation could have been much worse, and we’re very fortunate he’s going to make it through.”
