Subway service has resumed on Line 2 after a degraded cable caused a fire at Yonge station this morning, TTC CEO Andy Byford said.

At around 6 a.m. on Wednesday, subway serivce was suspended between St. George and Pape stations due to what Toronto Fire Services described as a small fire at track level inside Yonge Station.

According to Byford, a degraded cable at Yonge Station began to smoke and fire crews were immediately called to investigate.

TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said crews replaced 60 feet of a damaged power cable.

"We are checking everything to make sure nothing else has been damaged," Byford told reporters outside Yonge Station this morning. "I will always instruct that we suspend the service rather than put customer safety at risk."

"I know it is frustrating for customers, but we take no chances."

Two TTC employees were treated on site for smoke inhalation and declined being transported to hospital.

Nearly 90 shuttle buses are currently operating and some Line 1 trains are operating on Line 2 to supplement service. Riders can also use their TTC fare to ride GO Transit. Toronto rocket trains also supplemented service on west-end routes.

TTC employees were also unable to get trains at the Greenwood Yard out to the west end due to the service disruption, Ross added.

Regular subway service resumed on Line 2 in both directions at around 9:15 a.m.

Byford added that the TTC is a "very safe system" and that he plans on investigating the root cause of the issue.

"I find it intensely frustrating because every time something like this happens, it knocks back the work that we've been doing," he said. "Over five years, we've worked really hard to improve the service and to cut out incidents like this."

Many TTC riders were frustrated with the delay, which lasted several hours.

"Horrible. I've been travelling since 6:30 a.m.," one rider said.

"I already told my bosses I'm going to be very late," another said.

Another fire investigation caused delays on the Scarborough RT this morning at Lawrence East Station but that has since cleared.
