Ontario's Special Investigations Unit said Sunday that it is investigating an incident in Brantford in which a man suffered facial injuries while being apprehended by local police.

According to the SIU, Brantford Police Service officers pulled over a vehicle at around 7:30 pm Friday night, but a 34-year-old man fled the vehicle.

Plainclothes officers captured the suspect a short time later in the Icomm Drive/Greenwich Street and Clarence Street South area.

The man was taken to Brantford General Hospital with facial injuries.

The SIU said it assigned two investigators and one forensic investigator to probe the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
