TORONTO -- The province’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate after a 24-year-old robbery suspect was shot during a takedown at a Brampton gas station.
According to the Special Investigations Unit, officers with Peel Regional Police were investigating a carjacking that had occurred in York Region.
At around 7:45 p.m., officers attempted to take down the vehicle at a gas station in the area of Torbram Road and Williams Parkway, the SIU said.
Following an interaction with officers, one of the suspects was shot by a Peel police officer, the agency said.
“As a result, a 24-year-old man from the vehicle was struck. He was taken to hospital where he is undergoing surgery,” The SIU said in a statement.
Peel police said his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
Police did not say how long the suspects had been under surveillance prior to the shooting or what exactly precipitated the takedown.
“Investigators from our robbery investigation bureau – they were involved in monitoring some robbery suspects,” Cons. Bancroft Wright told reporters at the scene. “At some point in the monitoring there was an interaction between the suspects and police, whereby one of the suspects was shot.”
Two other suspects are in custody, according to police. Wright said all three were in the same vehicle prior to the incident and all are believed to be in their 20s.
Wright confirmed that York Regional Police were also involved in monitoring the robbery suspects.
No other information about the suspects or the robbery has been released so far.
The intersection has been closed as police and the SIU investigate.
Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to probe the incident.
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that is called in to investigate any incident involving police and a member of the public that results in death, serious injury, or an allegation of sexual assault.
