Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in after a shooting in Scarborough Sunday night.

The SIU said late Sunday that police were called to an apartment building at 1 Lee Centre Drive, near McCowan Road and Highway 401, shortly before 7 p.m.

“Upon arrival at a unit on the eighth floor, there was an altercation between officers and a male,” the agency said in a news release. “One of the officers discharged his firearm.”

A 31-year-old male was taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre “for treatment of a gunshot wound,” the release said.

Earlier Sunday, EMS told Toronto.CTVNews.ca that a second person was transported to hospital in serious condition: a woman in her 30s with stab wounds to her neck. The SIU release did not mention a second victim.

The SIU said three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an arms-length agency that investigates any incident that involves an Ontario police officer and where someone has been injured, dies or alleges sexual assault.
