A second-degree murder charge has been laid in connection with the discovery of a human torso in Riverdale earlier this year.

On April 19, an employee at a butcher shop near Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street found a human torso inside a garbage bag behind the building.

Police identified the torso as belonging to 30-year-old Melissa Cooper, who had been reported missing several weeks prior to the grisly discovery.

Albert Ian Ohab was arrested on April 29 and charged with one count of committing an indignity to a body.

In a news release issued Friday, police said Ohab has also been charged with second-degree murder on Aug. 19.

He was scheduled to make an appearance in court today.

Police have not released many other details pertaining to the investigation. It is not clear what led police to the arrest.

Anyone with information is being asked to call police at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
