A human torso found behind a Riverdale butcher shop earlier this month belonged to a 30-year-old woman, Toronto police said Saturday afternoon as they also announced an arrest in the case.

Melissa Cooper was reported missing several weeks ago and police confirmed it was her remains that were found on the morning of April 19 when an employee of a butcher shop at Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street looked inside a misplaced garbage bag at the rear of the building and made the grisly discovery.

Police did not say how they were able to connect the case to Cooper or what led them to arrest a 38-year-old suspect.

Albert Ian Ohab was charged with one count of committing an indignity to a body. He appeared in court Saturday at Old City Hall.

Investigators want anyone who was in contact with Cooper or the accused in the days before Apr. 19 to contact them at 416-808-7400, or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477 (TIPS).
