TORONTO - Provincial police have finished adding up the figures from their Victoria Day weekend highway blitz.

Officers laid 5,754 speeding charges over the three-day period in addition to 468 seatbelt charges and 162 impaired driving charges. Police also charged 146 drivers under the street racing law during the week for travelling more than 50 kilometres over the speed limit.

Those drivers had their licenses and vehicles seized on the spot.

Two people were killed in collisions over the long weekend on highways patrolled by provincial police - down from five in the same weekend in 2008.

On trails and waterways also patrolled by provincial officers, there were no fatalities, making this the safest Victoria Day long weekend in the past five years.
